How a Large Polish Pottery Bowl is Made – Step-by-Step

Creating a high-quality, large-size ceramic bowl (approx. 8 L volume) is a meticulous, multi-day process involving several stages of careful handwork:

1. Pouring the Mold (approx. 30 min)

Liquid clay (slip) is poured into a plaster mold. For XXL bowls, it requires experience to ensure even thickness and stability.

2. Drying & Releasing from the Mold (4–6 hours)

Once the clay sets, the mold is carefully removed and the bowl is left to air dry to reach leather-hard stage.

3. Cleaning & Smoothing (1–2 hours)

Edges are trimmed and the surface is gently smoothed by hand to remove imperfections.

4. First Firing – Bisque (approx. 10 hours + 24h cooldown)

The raw bowl is fired in the kiln at ~850°C, which solidifies the clay structure.

5. Hand Painting & Decorating (3–5 hours)

Artists hand-paint intricate patterns using sponges, brushes, and stamps. Each decoration is unique and requires full concentration and precision.

6. Glazing (30 min)

The bowl is dipped in a transparent, food-safe glaze that will seal and protect the surface.

7. Final Glaze Firing (approx. 12 hours at 1250°C + 24h cooldown)

In the final high-temperature firing, the glaze fuses with the surface, making the bowl highly durable, dishwasher-safe, and resistant to heat and staining.
